Saxon Shield and Interaction

The Saxon Shield

Publication of the journalism class's newspaper began in Fall 1962 while students were still attending Magnolia High School, and continued until the 2001 class year.  It was resurrected in 2012/2013 and Volumes were relabeled beginning with Vol. I.  Since it is the same publication, we show those editions as what they would have been if continued from the beginning plus the rebranded number.  The newspaper was published roughly on a monthly or bi-monthly basis typically with 6 issues in the first semester and 6 in the second; and it included headline news, follow up and investigative reporting, photo journalism, opinions, comics or other entertainment, sports results and stats, and sponsor advertising from local businesses.

The Shield received a First Class Honor rating from the National Scholastic Press Association and "First Place" in some categories from the American Scholastic Press Association in various years including 1968, 1978, 1979, 1980, and 2000; plus numerous individual staff awards in a number of publishing areas.

We are missing several Volumes and Issues of the Shield.  If you have a copy, please contact us at loarasaxonsalumni@gmail.com.

Interaction

The Saxon Shield offshoot newsmagazine Interaction was created in Fall of 1975 (Class of 1976) as an alternative method of communication and additional learning opportunities for the Saxon Shield staff.  According to Amy Alpern's (editor) comments in the first edition (May 3, 1976):

"The Saxon Shield staff has decided to take on a new challenge this year, with hopes of starting a new tradition in the area of communication here at Loara.

"Interaction recognizes people who, because of special qualities, offer unique perspectives in regard to Loara and its inhabitants.  We captured students, teachers and administrators in activities different from that of their usual role.  Many different cultures exist at Loara, yet they all seem to blend together in campus activities.

"It is the hope of the Shield Staff that through this magazine Saxons will realize that not only are we all either teacher, student, or administrator, but that we all all people."

The idea and Amy's position as Editor-in-Chief served her well -- she went on to be the feature editor for the Daily Trojan at the University of Southern California (~Interaction 4, 1979, p. 2).  The Interaction staff included an editor, journalists, photographers, and an advisor; and was published once a year until 1991 (15 Volumes).  During its run, Interaction won many awards including a First Class Honor Rating and three Marks of Distinction from the National Scholastic Press Association in 1979 and 1980.
